Common Types of Surgical Abortion
- Aspiration (suction aspiration, vacuum aspiration): Usually performed during the first 6 to 16 weeks gestation. Usually the patient only receives local anesthetic and antibiotics.
- Dilation & Evacuation: Usually performed after 16 weeks gestation. Usually, a numbing medication will be used on the cervix and a shot may be given to ensure fetal death has occurred.
- Dilation & Extraction: Usually performed after 21 weeks gestation.
