What is a Surgical Abortion?

A surgical abortion ends a pregnancy by removing the fetus from the woman’s womb (uterus). The type of surgical abortion depends on the woman’s stage of pregnancy.

Depending on the type of surgical abortion, they are usually performed around 6 to 21 weeks gestation. The availability of any procedure used in the third trimester is based on the laws of the state.

Common Types of Surgical Abortion

  • Aspiration (suction aspiration, vacuum aspiration): Usually performed during the first 6 to 16 weeks gestation. Usually the patient only receives local anesthetic and antibiotics.
  • Dilation & Evacuation: Usually performed after 16 weeks gestation. Usually, a numbing medication will be used on the cervix and a shot may be given to ensure fetal death has occurred.
  • Dilation & Extraction: Usually performed after 21 weeks gestation.
